Our Work

Ideas into action.

Moorwild works on practical farming questions — bringing together farmers, advisers, researchers, environmental organisations and businesses to explore what works in the real world.

Some projects begin on our own farm. Others begin with another farmer's problem. The common thread is turning good questions into practical work, useful evidence and ideas that other farms can learn from.

Farming Wetter Ground with Willow

Testing productive wetland farming on Somerset floodplain farms.

The practical challenge

How can productive wetland farming with willow be tested on Somerset floodplain farms?

Why it matters

The project considers a farm-led question about productive use of wetter land. Any environmental or commercial benefits remain to be tested; they are not presented as proven results.

What is being tested or explored

Planned to start in November 2026 for two years, this farm-led project continues research into new markets and business feasibility at a scaled-up model.

Moorwild's role

Moorwild contributes facilitation through Fi’s registered ADOPT facilitator role.

Willow for Water

Exploring willow’s potential to remove in-flow and legacy nutrients from sensitive SSSI and RAMSAR sites on the Somerset Levels.

The practical challenge

How might willow help remove both in-flow and legacy nutrients from sensitive SSSI and RAMSAR sites on the Somerset Levels?

Why it matters

Water management measures need to be considered alongside the practical requirements and viability of working farms.

What is being tested or explored

This project is in progress and explores how willow may help remove nutrients, both in-flow and legacy, from sensitive SSSI and RAMSAR sites on the Somerset Levels. This is a project aim, not a claim of measured outcomes.

Lowland agricultural peat

Working farmland and an important carbon store.

The practical challenge

What can farms produce, how can land be managed, and how can businesses remain viable as conditions become wetter?

Why it matters

Lowland agricultural peat supports farming and stores carbon. Its future involves practical questions about water, management and farm livelihoods.

What is being tested or explored

Moorwild explores approaches including grazing, willow and other crops suited to wetter conditions, connecting peat protection with useful products, farm livelihoods and practical land management. Paludiculture means growing and harvesting crops on wet or rewetted peat.

Floodplain & wet grassland farming

Practical farming experience informs questions about wetter land.

The practical challenge

How do cattle, grazing, water, labour, infrastructure and farm viability fit together on seasonally flooded grassland?

Why it matters

Farm decisions on floodplain and wet grassland need to account for both the realities of livestock farming and the landscape’s environmental importance.

What is being tested or explored

Fi’s experience of cattle and seasonally flooded grassland informs practical questions about managing this kind of land. No measured environmental or commercial outcomes are claimed here.

How we work

The right people around the table.

The best farming projects rarely need one expert. They need the right people around the table.

Moorwild brings together practical farming experience with the specialist knowledge needed for each question — whether that comes from another farmer, an agronomist, vet, ecologist, researcher, adviser, engineer, environmental organisation or commercial business.

Our role is often to help those different perspectives meet around a practical farming problem and turn them into something that can actually be delivered.
